Another life long interest has been gardening. Now we are creating a Farm at Millbrook where the students get a real taste of where food comes from. We utilized the product in the dinning hall. I’ve been involved with all the tasks from fixing hoses to planting seeds – helping the students learn how to use power tools as well for the raised beds.
The really interesting stuff are the maker and design thinking challenges that come when working on the farm. There is no end to the challenges and practical solutions when you apply design thinking to farming. One of my advisees worked on 3D printing parts of a hydration system for the green house.
We “pollinated” the “content” of the farm with English classes and Studio Art classes – taking the students out of the classroom and onto the farm. Changing the context of where class time is held is a great way to keep the students thinking.
